Amelia Smith’s high school French teacher let the class skip ‘tu’ (familiar form of ‘you’) because, as he said, the chances of them ever knowing an Actual French Person were so slim they wouldn’t need it. He would be as surprised as she is that she now knows many, including her partner, a winemaker, and two year-old daughter, who is now working on her English. Amelia moved to Paris from San Francisco in 1998.
