Jacquemart Andre A Unique Experience

By Arnie Greenberg

It’s pure opulence just looking around this magnificent old Mansion. Art and frescoes adorn the walls of this well-preserved and welcoming city mansion. The museum boasts one of the best collections of Italian Renaissance 18th century art in Paris. The owners were avid collectors with an eye for art treasures. The building itself, set in a fashionable area, is worth a visit. Paintings by Boucher and Fragonard are a few of the tasteful pieces collected by these wealthy patrons. Even today, one marvels at the style of living and the taste of two great collectors of art and furniture. This is one museum that should not be missed.

OfferedA private collection worth seeing. Look for St George and The Dragon or The death of Marat. (1794)

In what was once a bachelor home at the end of the 19th century, you are treated to tapestries, frescoes and antiques beyond compare. You will see Van Dyck’s Comte de la Plena and a fascinating Fragonard head of an old man. Here too are carriages in a hall once lit by 1000 candles. It is a setting for bankers and potentates. The collection was easier for the owners to amass than most museums, whose budgets were not nearly as large. So walk along mirrored walls past marbles and great works including some by David, the painter of Napoleon.

French 18th century works; Dutch paintings by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Ruysdeel; English Masters such as Reynolds, Hoppner, Lawrence; Italian Renaissance; 15th Century works by Mantegna, Bellini, Botticelli, Uccello; Add works by Canaletto, Mantegna, David, Reynolds, and Vigee-Lebrun.

The audioguide tells the story of the Jacquemart-Andres and their collection.

The Façade:

One enters via the carriage road that circles onto the main entrance. The columned façade is away from the street and stands, majestic and inviting. Inside, the delicately decorated walls, high ceilings and wooden floors add to the atmosphere.

 Our  opinion:

Imagine walking through a collection dating back to the 18th century with Italian, Dutch and French masterpieces plus Flemish works. The amazing private mansion from the Second Empire is a dazzling exhibit of collectors who saw art as their passion.

This museum should not be missed. Something magical happens as you ascend the ornate crafted staircases. Just being there makes you feel a certain elegance.

It’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
