French Vacation Times 2006
I thought it might be some good information for those of you either living in France or travelling to France to know the school vacation schedules. You are thinking to yourselves, "I do not have kids, this does not apply to me". But let me tell you it DOES apply to everyone especially if you want to move freely about the country or the "périphérique". A lot of businesses follow the school calendar which is why my yoga class was closed when I showed up on a chilly Tuesday evening only to find the doors locked, blinds down and chained shut.
A typical French vacation goes like this: the office clock strikes 5pm on the Friday before or tradition to make a bridge "faire le pont" to have a long weekend could apply. For example, Ascension day this coming year in on a Thursday so they take Friday as a personal day and get an extra long weekend out of it. So the clock strikes and everyone,
I mean everyone gets into their car and drives out of Paris---at the exact same time. They also return to Paris---at the exact same time. Its pure hell and its called a "Bouchon" a cork. The first French word that I learned. Here are the 2006 Holidays.
