Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! We found a DPAM store 2 blocks from my friend's apartment on Saturday in the 16th, and my wife found racks that were 20-50% off. Spent about 70 euros on sale stuff. There were a few other shops we stopped at, but at least half were closed for the weekend.

don't forget the supermarkets MONOPRIX, they have pretty little clothes, not so expensive and good quality!

You're ever so right! Monoprix is owned by Galleries Lafayette and has terrific things. Buy EVERYTHING is one day and if you qualify, you'll be able to collect the detax if you're leaving the EU!

And let's not forget Petit Bateau, with branches all over Paris. They sell cotton knits for kids, and the teeshirts are great for us (not so) big girls. ;-) Even with the miserable exchange rate, they're still less than half the price in the States. They just get better with age. Hopefully, like some of us. wub.gif

There's a branch of the store on Rue Vavin ... closer to Blvd. Raspail! As I have a new granddaughter, I'll be there tomorrow buying "one-ses".

They are the best.

About a block down toward the Louvre from the Place Vendôme is a sweet little shop with children's clothing. It's on the Rue St-Honoré before you come to the street leading to the Place du Marché.

The best idiomatic English equivalent of du pareil au même, I believe, is "six of one, half a dozen of the other".

Thank you! Knew there had to be a better translation!
The best idiomatic English equivalent of du pareil au même, I believe, is "six of one, half a dozen of the other".

Well, "du pareil au même" is indeed an expression...
when we say "c'est du pareil au même" in a sentence, that means "it's the same thing anyway".
We use it at the end of a sentence, when there is a comparison between two things.
another french expression is closed to it: "c'est blanc bonnet et bonnet blanc" (white hat or hat white)

like:

"préfères-tu ce pantalon ou celui-ci?
- c'est du pareil au même"

and the website is:
http://www.dpam.fr/

(dpam are the initials of Du Pareil Au Même)

good shopping!
Any recommendations for Paris? We will be in Paris on Bastille Day weekend, so does that mean stores are open, or closed? We will be staying with my friend in the 16th.

For baby and children's clothes, there are sooooooooooo many stores on Rue Vavin in the 6eme including "Du Pareil Au Même." However, I head to Rue St. Placide near the Bon Marche where many stores have their discount outlets. As for stores being open on July 14th -- I suspect not.

Ellen -- I really don't know the translation -- sorry.

rectification:

DPAM is "Du Pareil Au Même"

frenchbirl,

Du Pareil Au Meme - is that an expression? Does it translate?
Thank you for the correction. I was hoping that someone could recommend a place to shop for that sort of children's clothing.

Two years ago, I bought a dress for my granddaughter at St Malo at a children's clothing store, and the brand was DPAM (du Pareil du Monde). That dress was her favorite until she grew out of it. She is now 42 inches tall (107 CM) and weighs 41 lbs. Has she outgrown that brand, and if so, what kind of store should I be looking at for similar quality. I also need some nice clothes for my grandson, who is now 26 inches tall and weighs 18 lbs.

Any recommendations for Paris ?? We will be in Paris on Bastille Day weekend, so does that mean stores are open, or closed? We will be staying with my friend in the 16th.
