I hear there is going to be a daily non-stop flight between NY and Lyon ... has anyone else heard this too??

I arrived on an overnight flight from JFK. I really should get my notes out for a better answer.......my memory bank is empty......demain....

Mara: I'm amazed you have any memory of the trip at all! Daisy - have you attended the opera in Lyon? Lyon was a city known for its GREAT restaurants. Do any of our readers have favorite ones to suggest?

There was a renowned one right by the train station -- however, come to think of it, that was the OLD station and not the one that serves the TGV's.

I go up to Lyon every so often as it isn't too far from where I live. I agree two days isn't enough, but the first time I went there (before I moved to France) I was there two days and did manage to see a lot--enough to make me realize I wanted to return. The city ( the old part) has a quality to it that makes me think of Paris in the 1950s. It's a good walking city as well. Because it is a train hub, if you do change trains there, you can check your bags in the station and easily explore for a few hours between trains.
The first thing I did was go to the TI center which was just a couple of blocks from my hotel in that big square whose name I can't remember at this particular moment. Along with the Lyon Card I got a map and tape player for a self-guided walking tour. I went across to the Old Town and up to the Fourviere (sp?) Cathedral, then down to the Roman ruins and Museum. I also took a boat ride that went through both rivers that surround the city. Then I went to the Beaux Arts Museum. Mind you, this was on the same day that I arrived on an overnight flight from JFK. I really should get my notes out for a better answer.......my memory bank is empty......demain....

I found even with two days I was not able to see that much of what Lyon has to offer.

Mara and Al:

I'm sure you're correct that a one-day trip is too short. But, I feel that way about any city that has more than 600 inhabitants (OK - 6000). Mara -- what were some of Lyon's highlights that stand out in your memory bank?

I would tend to agree with Mara that a day trip to Lyon is a tease and a rush. The trip might be two hours but one has to get to both stations and get there before the train leaves.

Probably one of the main features to Lyon is their restaurants and a day trip hardly lets one appreciate this.

Has anyone visited the city recently? Bonjour Paris is putting together a list of day-trips. !

In advance thanks for sharing your intelligent.

what to see, do, where to eat, etc!

I really think there is too much to see in Lyon for a day-trip. I did it as a two day trip, went directly from CDG, got there a little after noon and left two days later around noon. I got the Lyon card which entitles you to a lot of free entries to museums, sights, walking tours, public transportation, mini-cruise. I found even with two days I was not able to see that much of what Lyon has to offer.

How many of you plan a side trip to Lyon? It's only 2 hours by TGV and it's an interesting city -- most especially the old city. If you want, you don't even need to stay overnight!

thanks--I already know where the synagogues are--I was wondering if anyone had actually been to them!
Daisy:

I simply accessed the phone book.

Perhaps some of our readers will know something about them.

I spent two days in Lyon on my last trip to France in April 03. I took the train directly from CDG. I immediately purchased the two day Lyon Pass which included numerous museum entrances, boat ride, public transport, walking tours, plus a self-guided tour with a tape machine. I really packed a lot into my 48 hours there and enjoyed it immensely. I also found a lot of info online which made my trip planning much easier. The covered walkways were great as well. The walking tour I took in Vieux Lyon (in English) had only two other people who left in the middle so I ended up with a private tour.
What I hope to see one day is the traboules, the covered walkways that allow users to go from one street to another somewhat secretly.

have been finding out so many great things about Lyon lately that I am considering studying there instead of Paris.

Being a student instead of a tourist can have an entirely different aspect to it. Most of us have enjpyed Lyon seeing the sights and the restaurants.

One of the most interesting of these sights is the Basilica of Norte Dame de Fourviere on the western heights of the city which also has some of the most interesting and extensive Roman ruins including an amphitheatre from 15 BC.

Also of interest is the boat ride around the center of the city and an extensive textile museum. Lyon is still a textile center and jacquard looms and the fabrics they make originated in Lyon.
Thank you very much Sam. biggrin.gif

I would like to find out more about Lyon. I have heard many great things about the city and am interested in visiting. If anyone has been there I would appreciate hearing about your experiences.

We spent 3 days in Lyon last December. We had a great time and we plan to go back someday.

Lyon is an easy two hour train trip from Paris, and most of the city sits where the Soane and Rhone rivers meet. Vieux Lyon is loaded with Renaissance buildings and there are several cathedrals worth a long visit. We each spent a couple of hours in the art museum, and the shopping streets have many of the things you'll see in Paris, but they're much more accessible since they're all in one area. Good and easy to learn metro and bus system, and a lot of very good food at all price levels.

Be sure to check out the Resistance Museum-it is the central facility in France documenting the Occupation. When we were there, they had a neat exhibition on the songs of WW2 in France, and they also have a small but good permanent exhibition area.
The Lyon tourist office is very good, and so is the web site. You can often find some excellent hotel deals advertized there.
Thanks BP Jean. I'll check it out. biggrin.gif

I have been in touch with the Lyon tourist bureau. They are going to send me some brochures. I have also found some interesting web sites with photos and webcams.
I have wanted to go to Lyon ever since reading Katherine Hall Page's excellent mystery set in Lyon, "The Body in the Vestibule." You might enjoy reading it for a sense of the city.
