Expected cost of Haircut? Brazilian Wax?

Stacy: have you unearthed any new salons that are note-worthy? For example, I see there are more nail salons and places where you can pop in for a waxing ....

Is competition causing prices to come down = not to mention, the economy?
So, liljaker, did you get a haircut while you were in Paris? If so, where?

I've noticed that the "average" price for a woman's shampoo/cut/style at a basic chain salon is about 35 euros. Of course, you can certainly pay much more than that, depending on where you go.

I've been to a couple of the pricier "name" salons (back when the dollar was actually worth something!) and they were good, but I have to say that some of my best cuts have been the 17-euro ones at Tchip. Besides, the name makes me laugh! laugh.gif
I know this was an old post, but wonder if anyone might be able to "update" with current salons in Paris that won't cost an arm and a leg but will still give a great cut. I will be in Paris in early March and am thinking about getting a cut in Paris rather than before I go to Paris. Any advice?
I was ready to head over to Espace Epilation on rue Cler for my first adventure with waxing but came across the following in the Pages Jaunes:

Studio Beauté 9ème

Their rates were more attractive than EE, so I called this morning and managed to get an appointment for this noon. I was very happy with my service! The estheticienne was wonderful. I don't know whether she speaks English or not, but she said she has several American clients. The prices are extremely reasonable. They also offer skin care, eyebrow and lash tinting, and hair care (cut/color/etc.). I will definitely be a repeat customer.

It was also time for me to get a haircut, but my budget is tight and I didn't want to spend the 30+ euros minimum it costs most places. Lo and behold, on the west side of Rue de Maubeuge just north of Rue de Chateaudun, there's a discount walk-in hair salon (though I can't for the life of me remember the name of it) where I got a shampoo, cut, and style for 17 euros. What a bargain! They do coloring as well. I'm happy with the cut and will likely be a repeat customer there as well, perhaps the next time I head back to Studio Beauté.

Who says you can't have beauty on a budget? smile.gif

An interesting follow-up (well, to me, anyway):

Today while I was on the bus I happened to pass two other Sergio Bossi salons and checked out the prices posted in the windows: For a shampoo, cut, and style, it was €30 in the 13th arrondissement and €35 in the 5th arrondissement, compared to €33 in the 11th arrondissement.

It was my first concrete example of how prices vary between different areas in Paris.
The one I went to was at 3 rue de la Roquette in the 11th (01.43.55.99.40).

I should note that it was pretty much a basic salon, not "chi-chi" at all. That was actually nice because I didn't have to tip the shampooer plus the stylist, etc., since my stylist did the entire thing.

Paris has a zillion coiffeurs, though, so you need not limit yourself to this one.
Stacy, could you post the address please? I looked at the site, but couldn't find it, even though I'm sure it's probably there.... I was in a hurry! blink.gif
I have been desperately needing a haircut, so I've been looking in the windows at all the salons I pass on foot or in the bus. The average price of a shampoo, cut, and style for a woman seems to be around 31 euros.

This afternoon I actually ended up ducking into a nearly empty Sergio Bossi salon, chosen simply because I was passing by and had had it with my hair, and I was quite pleased with the service and cut, which was €33 (shampoo/cut/style). The staff was young and the music was "young", too, but while I was there a woman in her 60s (obviously a regular) came in to have her hair done, so I can't say they cater to a specific type of client. I will most likely go back.

Stacy is right, haircuts can vary from inexpensive to outrageous depending on where you go. They also vary according to neighborhood. I go to Camille Albane on rue Bonaparte in the 6th and the cut is usually around 70 € I think. And yes, they do have stylists who speak English (I like Valerie). The ubiquitous Jean Claude Biguine is much less and you don't need an appointment. Also, everything is extra in a French salon, so if they ask if you would like a conditioner (soin) it's not included in the price of the cut.

As for waxing, I go to Espace Epilation which is a chain with several salons in Paris (I go to either the one in the 6th on rue de seine or another in the 16th). They have normal, brazilienne, and the "americain" (don't ask me why it's called this), which is "everything". I think a regular bikini wax is about 6 €, but that is only if you have a membership which is 9 € a month. Otherwise it's more, maybe double the price. They also do pedicures (beauté des pieds) and manicures.

Vraiment??? Stacy, does it really hurt?

I can't speak from personal experience, only the reports of friends who've had it done.

And you're right, Oasis still doesn't have her answer. I do hope someone will be able to help. I can only say that haircuts can range from €15 to €300+, depending on where you go. I believe Karen has in the past recommended Jacques Dessange. I had a wonderful cut two years ago at Alexandre Zouari's salon, but it was rather expensive then and with the fall of the dollar there's no way I could afford it now!

As for the wax, others here have inquired about it before but I'm not sure that they ever got an answer either.

I would have guessed a woman, but then maybe there are men who also get Brazilian waxes?

In any event, now that Oasis has been established as female, she still doesn't have the info she requested.
Sorry for leaving out the most important info.......I am a female!
Thanks

Oasis: A very good question, however one piece of information is missing. Are you a man or a woman? Your "pen-name" Oasis is not good enough to guess.

(I can only judge by my ex-husbands, who never would have put up with such torture!)
