Has anyone started thinking about New Year's Eve if they're going to be in Paris?

Almost had a heart attack when I discovered in the AOL spam folder about 8/9 reply notifications which cetrainly is progress, and today there was one in my email where it belongs. In fact it was this that I am replying to now. I vowed I was going to services in temple this Friday night. This must be the first repy notification in a couple of years. I hope that somebody knew what they were doing....rather than just tripping over a mouse at the accidentally right time.

Guess I jumped too fast when I wrote the above. The very next day I had one reply notification in my email and another in the Spam folder.
Now I receive the Forum without signing in but if I try to make a reply....then I have to sign in even though I am logged in.

Remember -- it's usually less expensive if you do your gourmet dining at lunch ...... many restaurants have pre-fix menus.

There are still a "few deals" to be had.

Eat some cheese or soup at dinner time. BUT - don't forget the wine bought at the grocery or liquor store. One may need to sacrifice but there a definite limits.

No matter how often I come to Paris I still consider myself a tourist, and spending part of the daylight hours in a restaurant for lunch is sacreligious to me. Having dinner in the evening almost always is one of the high spots of the day. Believe me , I have no concern about not finding a spot for dinner at regular high prices I recognize exist or even a splurge.I appreciate the advice But my comments in this thread essentially was the €75 plat in Lasserre. Soup and/or cheese for dinner in Paris...Never. I sometimes do have that at home.....but that's where you are Karen when you say that....n'est-ce pas???

StG......My comments on prices were in $s hence desserts listed at €25 I called $40 and many plats for one did approach $100.

Why do you think Expats living on a $$$ salary are eating a lot of pasta .... AT HOME??

You could try this nice Italian restaurant we found in the 7th (La taverna) where we were able to get an entree, plat, dessert and wine for 35 euros a piece.

It was more expensive, and not just because of the situation with the dollar, but the meal was slightly better this year and the wines were a major plus.

St. G........I was reading about Lasserre with interest as I'm planning a few days in Paris the end of February and sort of thought to give a couple of the "better restaurants" a break. I went to their web site and the price list gave me sort of a shock...most plats in the $100 range and all the desserts at $40. Starters were almost in the same range as plats and it is still only a ** restaurant.

Al - We had a set menu so there wasn't any breakdown in price, but I checked the regular menu and while the prices are steep the plats above 100 euros are for two persons. Unfortunately, the prices at ** and *** restaurants are rising faster than the dollar is falling.

St. Germain: How did that dinner compare to last year's? Except that I'm sure it was more expensive.

The last time I ate at Lasserre was in July 1969 and of course the roof was uncovered and even more exciting was the display of fireworks in the sky. I don't remember the occasion...something at the Grand Palais or even it was July 14th. It was one of my most memorable trips as we came to Paris the night of the American moon landings. We left an unbelievably crowded Trafalgar Sguare as thousands cheered the landings and continued the celebration along the Champs. In 2008 it is hard to believe the type of reception Americans received then. All the automobile salons (then the main retail catagory on the Champs)had TVs going and recognizable American tourists received congratulations.

On New Years Eve we had dinner at Lasserre. We had not been for thirty years but we kept hearing how good it was and a friend helped us get reservations. The service was impeccable and the restaurant as beautiful as we remembered it. Every half hour the roof was opened to the sky, which, despite how cold it was outside, made it pleasant inside. As for the food, each course was served with a different wine. A glass of Champagne De Saint Gall Cuvée vieille vigne 2002 accompanied canapés chauds et froids and foie gras de canard confit aux figues; a Corton Charlemagne 2002 Domaine Juillot accompanied and homard breton à la nage, consommé aux saveurs iodées and Truffe noire du Périgord en chausson sauce Périgueux; a fabulous Petrus 1981 Pomerol was served with Chapon fin de Bresse et truffe noir; a Porto Feist 1975 accompanied a Brillat-savarin aux truffes coeurs de céleris aux poires et vieux porto and a trilogie de chocolat grand cru parfum de fèves de tonka; and a glass of Champagne Cristal Roederer 2000 was served with Dôme glacé meringué fruits exotiques et citron vert. Finally we had a cafe with mignardises et chocolats.

We left before midnight to see Eiffel Tower sparkle for the first time in 2008 as we crossed the Seine in front of the Esplanade. The Champs Elysees was crowded with police and emergency vehicles. The police had closed some of the Metro stops but we were able to get a taxi home on the east side of the Esplanade.

Hello board,

Repeat visitors will be in Paris for new years and seek advice for dinner that night. We are interested in an evening with good food, drink perhaps music to celebrate the new year. We are staying at hotel Chateau Frontenac, the concierge there has made reservations for us at L'Appart for New Years. We are not sure if this is a good place for us or not. Any impressions or reaction to this place. We are attempting to get reservations for the new years eve dinner at Fendi but fear they are sold out. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Could any of our readers tell us where they celebrated New Year's Eve??
It's always fun to hear about the festivities...

St. Germain??
