Especially when you drive as I do - rather used to (:
"Pour renforcer la sécurité des cyclistes, le CISR a décidé de rendre obligatoire le port d’un gilet de sécurité, pour tout conducteur et passager d’un cycle circulant hors agglomération, de nuit ou de jour lorsque la visibilité est insuffisante."

Cyclists need to wear the vests outside urban areas, at night, and during the day when visibility is poor. Failure to do so can mean of fine of 22-35 euros.

This only applies to bikers and not riders of motorcycles and scooters.

It makes them SO much easier to see!
Stacy: That's a terrific idea and a real safety measure. When I was at Surcouf, the vests, etc. were for sale. Are bikers going to be required to wear the vests? I sure hope so. Sometimes, they are impossible to see as they whisk by you.
New regulations are in place which require all cars in France to have an official yellow reflective vest and warning triangle in their cars to use in case of an emergency stop, for example, an accident or a car problem which forces you to pull over and stop on the side of the road. Anyone who gets out of the car must wear the yellow vest, and the warning triangle should be placed on the road at least 30 meters before the stopped car or whatever problem is being signaled. The vest must be put on before exiting the car. Anyone without these items in their car or failing to put the vest on *before* getting out can be subject to a fine of 90 to 135 euros. The use of the car's emergency flashers is also mandatory in these circumstances.

I'm guessing that rental companies will provide these with their cars, but you may want to check just to be sure.
