I belive, based on the responses, that the cost of the driving licence itself is much less than the 1000-1200 € mentioned, but (I presume) that most of the actual cost is the "Driving School" due to the fact (I again presume) that public schools do not have driving instructions for the pupils like here, where car dealers summly highschooles with "curtessy cars for that purpose. Also many of the parents do not drive them selves, so they could undertake the supplemental instruction.

Do you suppose it's so expensive to discourage people from getting a license? I would think many people would have to save up for quite a while just to be able to drive a car. It still seems odd.

It is neither a canard nor a "canular" allas! Quotation in "L'Expansion" magazine: Medium cost 1 200 €. Of course, that includes the costs of Auto-School and tax for the licence.

Well, I don't think so, but that's why I asked - I couldn't believe it either! It's in the "Actualities" section of the magazine and it's a reputable magazine. The blurb says, "Money generated from fines from French radar cameras will be used to reduce the cost of the French driver's license. The current cost of a license is more than 1,000 euros, making it prohibitively expensive for many potential drivers. The EU wants to create a standard driver's license for all of its member states, although currently each country has its own set of criteria and costs."

I was just reading in the July issue of France magazine that French driver's licenses cost 1,000 euros. I had no idea they cost that much. I wonder how many people don't drive because they can't afford to get a license.
