Off topic, but I ran across three different instances of people using "daresay" on other forums this past week, so I'm apparently not the only one. ;)
Stacy .. it's funny how there's a big hoopla and things quiet down. The investigators are clearly looking and seeing if there are others involved.

Al -- we look forward to reading your trip report! ;-)
Al: Sorry, I've never been one to follow trends.

Karen: No, I haven't heard anything more. I suspect we won't until they get to whatever the next legal step is.
I DARESAY....wow. just got back from London and although I didn't hang out with the La Dee Das , that expresson is long gone and very dated. In case you are wondering, my Trip Report (Paris and London) is in the works .
Stacy - has there been any additional news. I've haven't read any.
David, I'm actually glad to know from you what Rambuteau did -- that metro stop was a few minutes walk from my apartment so i took it frequently and was up and down that street often. I kept forgetting to look up the name and see who he was and what he did to earn a street and metro stop!

Now I know! :)
David: We always appreciate a good debate and an exchange of ideas. It's a way of hearing other people's perceptions. The only things for which Bonjour Paris has zero tolerance are personal attacks and obscenity.
To reiterate what Stacy said, we hope you'll stick around.
I certainly apologize if you read my comment as defensive, as I didn't in any way intend it as such. I'm naturally curious and simply find other people's experiences and points of view interesting.

In any case, please do feel free to stick around the site, even silently if you prefer--though if you'd like to speak out on any topic at all I'd enjoy reading your posts, as I'm sure others would as well.

Regards,
Stacy
"May I ask, out of curiosity, what experiences you had in France that gave you that impression?

I daresay nearly every country has its share of extremists of one sort or another."

First of all, I think that this comment sounds defensive, and I'm not sure about what.

"I daresay nearly every country has its share of extremists of one sort or another."

I don't think that I ever said anything that even implies otherwise. In the first sentence of the three you quoted, I mentioned "the doctrinaire Old Left", not "extremists" - I don't automatically assume that they're the same people - and I said that they were alive and well, not that they are a majority, or characteristically French, or anything else. Am I now to assume that all of the Old-Leftists in France are dead, or ill?

My experience was based on what I read of the signs while watching the sans-papiers demonstration in Paris, maybe in September, 2007. When I see significant numbers of AVOWED, SELF-NAMED "Communists" and other "Marxists" in a major capital, I assume that the Old Left is alive and well in that country. My impression was that a similar demonstration in other countries where I have been would not include such a large number or a large percentage of avowed, self-named Marxists. I may be wrong. I usually am.

If noone here minds, I will stop responding to anything on this thread. I have no political opinions which are important enough - even to me - to be worth arguing about, even by implication. The last French political figure who interested me at all was Rambuteau, who as préfet de la Seine gained a permanent place in my heart by switching the street-lights of Paris from oil to gas. And the politics of other countries interests me even less.

Thanks.
D.
"I remember the strong impression I had last time I was in France, about a year ago, that the doctrinaire Old Left is alive and well there in a way that it isn't in many other countries. And now violent anarchists. Maybe someone should just tell them that it's no longer 1905."

May I ask, out of curiosity, what experiences you had in France that gave you that impression?

I daresay nearly every country has its share of extremists of one sort or another.

Thanks for the information, everyone.

I remember the strong impression I had last time I was in France, about a year ago, that the doctrinaire Old Left is alive and well there in a way that it isn't in many other countries. And now violent anarchists. Maybe someone should just tell them that it's no longer 1905.

Mrs Alliot-Marie said earlier this year she feared a resurgence of left-wing terrorism in France after anarchists had been found with explosives.

Stacy: As I read the article, it sounds as if it may be an inside job. Is there any additional news? And yes, there are indications it may be the same group? Any and all insights are appreciated.
Update: Ten people have been arrested in connection with the rail sabotage.

Hello David!

There haven't been any terribly detailed reports yet as they're still investigating, though at this point it may be pointing toward a coordinated sabotage effort.

A Google News search brings up quite a few articles:

The French media is covering the story too, of course, but so far haven't announced any major breakthroughs.

I found it interesting that when I did an internet search for SNCF sabotage it also brought up reports of incidents in November 2007. Coincidence? I have no idea.

Good morning!

Just pure curiosity. I don't understand who is sabotaging the SNCF lately and why. Today is the first I've heard of it. Could someone point me to some serious background articles on the subject? Either French or English is fine.

Thanks.
D.
