I've been to the Getty many times, and really enjoy their medival illustrated book section. A close second, I think, is the Cluny in Paris. They had a great exhibit one time on how a typical illustrated book was made, from parchment fabrication to final binding. If I hadn't moved north to Silicon Valley, I would have wound up a docent for their Greek and Roman section. By the way, the Malibu Getty should be finished in another year, and all the classical stuff will be moving back to Malibu, leaving more room for exhibits starting the middle ages.
and if we believe that we should be wary of strangers offering to sell us the pont-neuf...
The French Tourist Bureau has announced that L'Orangerie will reopen in early 2006 and suggests a web site for further updates.....

We live in California too and have been to the Getty--just once, but there's a lot of good stuff, and both the museum's architecture and setting are magnificent.
Speaking of museums, if any of you are ever in California, I just got back from the Getty Museum and the L. A. County Museum, and they were both wonderful! They contain a lot of French art and furniture from the Palace of Versailles
It's a good thing we saw Les Nymphéas on our first trip to Paris!

As per the following thread (Museum Section!), it's
planned for 2006.
I believe it, when it's open, not before.
Ditto! I've been waiting since 2000 to see this
Well, pooh.

I was originally hoping to go there during my trip in spring 1999, only to find that it had just closed... at this rate I fear it will never open. Like Ursula, I'll believe it when I see it.

Does anyone know when the l'Orangerie will be re-opening?
