St-Germain-des-Prés

St-Germain-des-Prés

This is the neighborhood that, if you are French, you dream to live in; and the neighborhood, if you are a tourist, you come to stroll in and take in a cup of coffee at a street side cafe. The pretty little must-visit streets are rue Mazarine, rue de Seine, rue du Dragon, rue de Rennes, rue Bonneparte, rue de Buci, carrefour de l'Odeon, and of course blvd Saint Germain. The most famous places to grab a coffee or a meal are Les Deux Maggots, Cafe des Flores, Brasserie Lipp, and Le Procope, but don't overlook Cafe Bonneparte.  There's plenty to discover in this neighborhood, and if you want to get lost in Paris, start here.

Stories about St-Germain-des-Prés

  • Marché de Buci

    By Debralee Bertrand
Rue de Buci is a seemingly never-ending array of produce and flowers spilling into the street. That day I had my camera only and was taking photos for studio paintings. I chose this particular shop because of the sunflowers--they seemed to be smiling at passersby. The contrast in textures was also interesting, the softness of the flowers against the hard masonry. • Cafe Writing in Montparnasse and Odeon

    By Stephanie Lomond Merrill

I first fell in love with Paris when I was 15 years old, back in 1978, during a family summer vacation.  I'm now 44, remembering fondly the first time I returned to Paris at 20 as a tour guide for a friend in my French class.  We stayed in Montparnasse in the 14th arrondissement, my special place in Paris... a place I call home.
